Sam Continues Moving Past the “Movie”

I wasn’t going to post this. I saw it and thought it was a little too heavy on the references about a certain movie that we

try not to mention to much over here. But then I reread it this afternoon and decided to go ahead and post it. And since most of us are fans of the movie as well as Sam, I thought you all would appreciate it! But unlike other blogs and such, I’m concentrating on the non-Twilight/Rob part of the article because, to me, it’s the most interesting!

Enjoy!

Bradley’s been honing his skills since he was 18, the year he realized making music was what he wanted to do with his life.

A year after his family moved to North Vancouver from England, where he grew up and formed a lasting friendship with Pattinson, he experienced what Oprah Winfrey would call an “aha moment.”

He’d quit school without graduating [“when it came to exams I acted like an ass,” he says] and was working at Cafe Crepe on Granville Street when he decided to perform outside on his break.

“A homeless person sort of walked by — it was a woman — and she started dancing and singing along to my song and I kind of looked back inside and my co-workers were dancing inside,” he says.

“I just didn’t want to go back to work. I definitely wanted to play music and I thought it was a possibility.”

His folk musician mother, Lee Lindsey, was supportive of his choice: “Everyone else was kind of like, ‘pipe dream,’ ” he says.

It might have been.

“Nothing really happened until seven or eight months ago [when] I actually became a musician,” he says, referencing the Twilightmania that followed the release of the film. “I say nothing happened but I was working on you know, writing songs, I was playing in venues all over Vancouver.”

Musically the serious-faced singer is a talented guitarist with a knack for churning out slow-burning songs in the tradition of David Gray, all wrapped in a nice indie-style package.

Lyrically he covers universal topics like heartbreak head-on with simple observations, as in Sea Blue: “To live for love is clearly nonsense,” and “We seem to need a whole lot more.”

And you can tell his talent shines most when he works a crowd — guitar in hand, voice clear and strong.

(YouTube is full of his concert videos, sometimes referencing Pattinson or Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart, both of whom have attended his shows in Vancouver.)

“I feel very natural being on stage,” Bradley says.

“I want to entertain. I want to move people. Whether it be like a hip shake or a heartache. Oh god that was cheesy, but you know what I mean?”

You can read the entire article here, including more about the “movie.” I hope you guys get what we are trying to do here. We love the movies and all, but eventually the movies are going to end and we want to guys to be successful long after that happens!

  1. Sam, Marcus & Bobby are lovely people. Lovely people attract other lovely people as friends. It’s not surprising that they all support and cheer one another on, and I for one am thrilled that What’s-His-Name put his mates’ music into the suggestion box for The Movie. How else would I have ever been exposed to Sam’s passionate voice (cue ‘Pretty Boy’), Bobby’s amazing poetry (‘Calling out to the panic-soaked sky…”) or Marcus’ incredible guitar-playing (pick a song- any song)?
I have had a hole in my soul that I never knew was there until these guys stepped in and filled it. May God grant them many years to play, sing, & entertain us, and to continue loving one another the way they do.

  2. I was never so glad that a song accidently got put into the hands of a director LOL. It was great that one of Sam, Bobby and Marcus’ friends just happened to have a CD which had a couple of great songs on it and was listened to and put into the movie. If not for hearing their friends songs, I wouldn’t have been introduced to them. I first heard of Sam on April 10th when I was directed to his Myspace page and found that he was playing a show in my hometown that night! I was on the phone within minutes telling a friend that we just HAD to go! I am seeing Sam for the 3rd time tomorrow night in Vancouver and I cannot wait!

I just recently had the opportunity to see Bobby Long live in Vancouver and it is something you don’t want to miss if you haven’t seen him. I have yet to see Marcus Foster but am sincerely hoping he will come to Vancouver on his December tour in North America.

I look forward to hearing their music and seeing their shows for many years to come.

  3. I think you summed it all up with the end of your post:
“We love the movies and all, but eventually the movies are going to end and we want to guys to be successful long after that happens!”

That’s what it’s all about. I love that this is a place we can come that’s ALL about them and showing our support for them. I hope sincerely that they find the success that they deserve.
