The One Where I Proclaim My Love for Jack Standen!
Dear Jack Standen,
This letter has been a long time coming. I just had to finally go on and say it.
I love you.
I’ll admit, I was a little skeptical of you at first. Cause let’s get real. Your Twitter avi kinda freaked me out. I don’t care that LiLi said she loved it more then socially acceptable. I see crazy eyes, I think crazy guy.
But I put that all aside, cause you are in Camp Foster for the new album and were tweeting tons of deets on what you, XMAAS and Marcus were doing all the time.
And how much do I LOVE you guys for calling it Camp Foster! I never got to go to a summer camp, so I kinda think LiLi and I should come and be counselors so we can relive this part of our childhood. We”ll bring t-shirts!
And since I can’t depend on Marcus to tweet all the goodies from recording (srsly, teach that boy how to use Twitter), I started falling in like with you. We hadn’t hit the love part… yet.
But last week, when you started dropping the Marcus Foster pics on me, well, I knew your were the real deal. And I fell in love. How could I not? You tweeted a picture of Marcus and a freakin’ puppy!!
And then, yesterday, you did it again.
Can my heart take anymore? I think you should keep testing it with your tweets and amazeballs pictures that you clearly take with Hipstamatic, making my fake hipster heart super happy!
In fact, could you do me a favor? You know, since we are in love and all. I’m gonna need you to take all these bad ass pics and tweets you’ve been posting from Camp Foster and make a photo book, bring them on the tour and sell them to fangirls like me who want to see funny pics of Marcus the recording process in addition to buying the new album. I promise, these things would sell like hotcakes. And I mean hotcakes with blueberrys and hot maple syrup. Yum!
So, Jack, all I gotta say is… keep up the good work. We are depending on you over here!
Much Love,
Amber
P.S. Um, why aren’t all of YOU following Jack yet? Get on it!
I’m THIS Close to Pulling the Emergency Handle Marcus!
Yesterday, LiLi and I got all kinds of jazzed up! We were kind of dying for some Marcus news for awhile, and finally last week, you came out of the woodwork and tweeted for us:
Of course, we were walking on air for you! I mean, I literally squeed out loud and did a happy dance. So then, yesterday, Chris Maas (XMAAS on the Twitter) tweeted this:
LiLi was excited. I said WTF. Because back in June, you tweeted this:
Now, here is my question… is the new EP still coming? Or are you ::gasp:: starting over since you got the record deal? Cause let me tell you, I’ve been eagerly awaiting this EP and I don’t know how much longer I can wait.
Since it’s what we do, LiLi and I had a little chat about this. Here is my reaction, in real time:
So there. See what you are driving me to Marcus? Not only am I thinking about pulling out Harold & Kumar this weekend, watching, laughing, and then being all sad panda about not having a White Castle near me, but I’m also getting impatient and am THIS close to pulling the emergency handle.
Give us a little update. Do it for Sam, cause trust. He does not want to be on the receiving end of that awkward DM.
P.S. I just saw and rememebered I mean to ask you about this tweet:
Srsly. Dude. I will blow your ass out of the water on Words with Friends. I am this close to just searching for MarcusFoster1 and starting with this battle royale of word play. Oh, and don’t cheat and use your English words on me. I only can write in American.
P.P.S. For any of you wondering… I would NEVER pull the emergency handle. Ever. And I stay away from that mofo when I am drunk, cause I don’t trust Drunk Amber with the emergency handle. At all.
Amber’s Drunken Concert Review (Cause that’s how I roll!)
Okay seriously. No beer next time I’m at a Sam show. Really.
Actually, I did remember pretty much everything from the Dallas show. I kind of had an amazing time. And the night pretty much ended up being epic, as always.
Let us start from the beginning…
I arrive, and some how I am at the front of the line to get into the show. I don’t know how this happened. In case you all don’t realize, I’m normally not there till the doors open cause seats by the bar are normally easy to find for some reason. Thank goodness our ticket winner Shannon came early and managed to mosey her way to the front of the line. I was lonely. And the girls behind me kept talking about how awesome their recent trip to church camp was, which was making me feel awkward since my boobs were hanging out. No really. They were. We’ll talk more about my cleavage later… I promise!
We got inside, got my $9 beer and I was starting to feel a little bit better. I was right in line of where I knew the eff me eyes would be and was explaining the awesomeness that is a Sam Bradley concert to Shannon, who was a Sam virgin before that night. Woo hoo! Always happy to assist someone with popping their cherry!
Poor LiLi did not make the Sam performance at the show. I was so sad for her. I even saved her an amazing spot (in line with the eff me eyes. duh.), but it was not meant to be. And, while I was hoping Sam might start a little late, he started 10 minutes early. LiLi didn’t stand a chance. Which is why you are getting the “Amber only” side of things right now.
The show starts and I tell you what, the boy can perform! This is why I’ve fallen in love with Sam. I was just in like with him until the first live performance. And now, even at concert number 4 for me, the boy still has it! In fact, dare I say he has gotten better since the first time I saw him? Yes, I dare say it!
My fave songs from Friday? Duh. Lights. Mainly cause I love the f-bomb a lot, especially with church camp girls standing next to me. That was win. Scared was equally amazing. And he busted out this song called Sugar Mama, which just made me giggle thinking about this post I wrote about Sam’s quest for a sugar mama. I’m guessing he’s still looking ladies! I’d volunteer, but I’m pretty sure you have to be rich to be a sugar mama, right? Damn it. He also sung a song written by his mom during the show. During an awkward silence before he started, I yelled out “moms rock!” Yes. That was me. Love me through it.
Overall, the show was major win, with the biggest flaw always being that it is too short. But I guess that is a sacrifice you have to make when opening for other musicians, which I will say, is a smart marketing move on Sam’s part. I’ve seen lots of positive tweets from Brooke Fraser fans on Sam over the past few days, and it’s all about growing the fan base, right?
Do I dare talk to you all about the “meet & greet”? Of course I will. Duh. That was the best part of the show.
So I only went through the line twice. Let’s all be amazed by this, cause you know how I am when I have a couple of beers in me. And apparently Sam does too, cause whilst talking to Two Shoes, Sam waved at me, then asked me if I was drunk. I shook my head no, and then he gave me “the look”, then I shook my head yes. Color me embarrassed.
I talked to Two Shoes for a bit while we waited, and while I apparently thought it was the first time we really met, he informed me otherwise. Via Twitter. Awesome.
@ShackofSoul we defs met in LA.. One can't forget you—

Alright, enter Sam. First things first, I had him sign the bazjillion things I bought at the merch stand, got my hug, and then took my picture. Which I love, thanks to Picnik’s 1960′s effect!
Then whilst trying to turn off my camera, I managed to snap a shot of my chest. Sam leaned over and whispered, “I think you just took a picture of your cleavage.” And I pretty much died right there. Cause I did, well sort of. This was what happened…
Gah. Embarrassing.
I walked away at that point and proceeded to wait on LiLi, who finally got there and then we got to the end of the line again (which luckily was the end, cause we needed some extra Sam time).
And then…. To be continued!
Hahahaha! LiLi is gonna spill the rest of what happened that night tomorrow.
What will you do till then?!? Duh. Enter to win your own autographed copy of Zuni! Read the instructions in yesterday’s blog and srsly, get entered.
where we get Serious Sam and actually “review” Zuni…
Okay, people. Gather round. We have an announcement. Ready?
MixTape Monday will not be posted today, in lieu of Amber and I trying our hand at some seriousness. Like Serious Sam-ness. And if you think about it, Sam’s new album Zuni, is technically new music, so we aren’t too far off the bag, no?
Either way, your regularly scheduled programming will be back next week, but for today, join us as we offer our very much amatuer “review” of Zuni.
LiLi’s thoughts:
I am not going to lie. I was very nervous about listening to Zuni. Mainly because I was worried how much it was going to differ from the Sam that I was “used to”. Which is totally unfair, I know.
As fans of any artist/group, we want them to grow and mature but at the same time, we revolt when it’s too different. Not that I am talking about revolting in a Dylan-goes-electric-way, but there is always the fear of how a singer/songwriter/acoustic artist will translate with a back up band and studio enhancements.
Turns out, I had nothing to worry about. At all.
For me, the first listen of a new album is the decider. The first note, chord, sound, whathaveyou. If it doesn’t get me from the very first moment then it’s over. That doesn’t meant that I can’t learn to like it- to appreciate it and enjoy a few tracks, but there are very few albums that I can listen all the way through.
Zuni is now on that list. From the very first listen, I knew that this was going to be one of those albums. I mean, how can you NOT love an album that starts off– very first word– with “fuck”? Brill.
And yet, it’s not my fave song on the album. Currently, that title goes to “No One and Me”. I am sure that that will change, especially after the 127th a few listens, but right now it reminds me of summer. With the weather getting colder here in Texas, listening to that song makes me think of driving to my parents house by the lake, with the windows rolled down while singing as loud as I can.
As for my least favorite song– well– (SPOILER ALERT) I will have to agree with Amber on this one– it’s “Passport”. I mean, we do share a brain after all, but my reasons are slightly different. I really do love the song. A lot. But after stumbling across a certain work of fiction ::coughFanFictioncough:: that is based on this song, I can’t really listen to it without images from that story ::ahem:: popping up. It’s forever changed for me. And please, no comments on the fanfic reference. Believe me, we learned our lesson last time.
Overall, I think this album works because Sam still did his “thing” but enhanced it. Like he went from 2D to 3D. The additional back up band, the vocals, the studio mods, all helped in making him sound richer and more rounded out– as opposed to overpowering him, as some studios tend to do with singer/songwriters. The album also had a more cohesive feel to it– the songs flowed from one another, which was a change from the EP that Sam released last year. Don’t get me wrong, while I enjoyed have a physical copy of those 5 songs, they felt more of a “see what I can do/here’s my range” sampling that jumped from style to style instead of the “complete” feeling that Zuni has.
Amber’s thoughts:
Rewind back to last Tuesday. I did some reaction boos to the new album Zuni. A few people listened to them, as I found out at the show last Friday. (Holla Sam!) But let’s face it, that was just my reaction to it all. My initial thoughts.
After listening to the CD all day Tuesday, all day Wednesday, most of the day Thursday, then on the drive all the way to Dallas Friday and all the way back home on Saturday, I think I have a much better review of it all.
First things first, just comparing this EP to the first one, it is a huge improvement. Not saying the first one is bad at all, cause it’s not. But this one just flows so much better for me. The song choice is killer, the order flows, overall… just win! I was actually overwhelmed by the awesomeness. Which is a good thing. I am rarely overwhelmed.
As far as my fave song on the album, this is difficult. Can I pick two? I’m gonna go with Lights. Probably because 1) I fell in love with this song over a year ago thanks to a certain Youtube video; and 2) the recorded song actually sounds just as good as the live version, which NEVER happens! And to all those who think I’m kidding about waking up to that song every morning… yeah, so far, I’m on a roll!
Second fave song is tough, but I’m gonna go with Wide Open. Those who listened to my boos may be shocked cause I said that at first, I wasn’t down with the new version. I like it acoustic and just a voice and a guitar. And I still do. Quite a bit in fact. But after listening over and over and over and over, and then one more time, I decided that the new arrangement totally works and the song is kind of, well, let’s just say it does it for me.
Overall, least fave is still Passport. Probs cause that’s just not my fave song in general. I said it and I mean it. I like it live cause it’s fun and all. But I dunno. Maybe I am alone in this. And that’s cool.
Man, I felt like I just got a bit serious Sam about this album. But it deserves it. It is legit GOOD! Buy it on iTunes. Now.
Contest Alert!!
If you are one of those peeps that don’t get to see Sam this tour to get your hands on a physical copy, well, good news. I am awesome. And I bought an extra copy. AND I had Sam sign it. AND I’m gonna go on ahead and give it away.
You want to win it? Comment on this post here and put 1) Your fave song from the new album and why; and 2) be sure to say “I want to win Zuni!” cause sometimes we have people comment who don’t want to win, which is cool. I want to make sure only the peeps that want it are entered.
